Disruptive innovation and health inequalities

Since Covid-19 the adoption of AI, digital and technology solutions within healthcare has been accelerated at an impressive pace. It has been evidenced that in commissioning these disruptive innovations that the worsening of health inequalities is not always considered. The following report details research undertaken in 2022 and outlines the possible implicit bias, under-representation and inequalities built into innovations designed using datasets, or medical tests that historically favour men and white ethnicities. Additionally, the research covers digital exclusion within healthcare and provides ways to reduce the impact upon those patients digitally excluded. The aim is to use this research when designing, developing or commissioning disruptive innovations to avoid unequal access, treatment and experience for diverse groups of patients and service users.
